Brazilian Fun Jazz reaches the Sweet Sixteen

Some favorite MPB’s remain, while a few surprise choices are still alive

Just like the NCAA which wrapped up 52 games in six nights and four days, the third annual Brazilian Fun Jazz Tournament is taking shape.

The biggest upsets were early on:

In the Elis Regina Region, Ze Bruno KO’d Michael Franks just like what Georgia State did to Baylor.

In the Emilio Santiago Region, Soulstance’s sassy grooves were simply too much for Leo Gandleman to handle.

On Saturday, the first top seed of Villanova went down in the East Regional.

Likewise, Nilson Matta creamed Joyce Cooling in the crazy but chilled Monica da Silva Region.

On Sunday, Gal Costa again was better than Marisa Monte.

Here are your updated matchups for Thursday and Friday:

Oscar Castro Neves Region

1. Gisele de Santi

5. Sabrina Malheiros

3. Joao Gilberto

7. Gal Costa

Elis Regina Region

1. Milton Nascimento

4. Claudio Zoli

6. Pat Metheny

2. Diana Krall

Monica da Silva Region:

8. Nilson Matta

4. Fabiana Passoni

3. Brandy Volant

7. Wanda Sa

Emilio Santiago Region:

1. Frank Sinatra

5. Bebel Gilberto

11. Al Jarreau

2. Bianca Rossini

The winners will meet next weekend for a chance to be in the Brazilian Fun Jazz Final Four come Easter weekend.

Should be interesting to see who emerges as the true virtual cream of the crop.  Stick around and find out next week.
