Olympic Update: USA Women’s Basketball Roster Announced
The 12 woman roster hopes to extend their Olympic winning streak of 41 games dating back to the 1992 Barcelona semifinals.
All but three have participated in the Olympics before (an Olympic record for retainees). Not shockingly enough–especially for those of you who follow my other blog here on WordPress that talks about college basketball, five of the ladies have NCAA championship winning experience while playing at Connecticut.
The full roster and their past Olympic participation years, if applicable:
Seimone Augustus (2008, 2012)
Sue Bird (2004, 2008, 2012)
Tamika Catchings (2004, 2008, 2012)
Tina Charles (2012)
Elena Delle Donne
Sylvia Fowles (2008, 2012)
Angel McCoughtry (2012)
Maya Moore (2012)
Diana Taurasi (2004, 2008, 2012)
Lindsay Whalen (2012)
The most notable names that were among the 25 finalists picked in January, but were not chosen for the Olympics roster included Skylar Diggins and Candace Parker.
In terms of overall international experience, the Olympic Talk page on NBCSports.com mentioned that Bird, Taurasi, and Catchings could tie former teammates Teresa Edwards and Lisa Leslie for the most Olympic team sport gold medals for any American athlete.
Griner finally is getting her chance to play after having to withdraw three months prior to the 2012 London Games with having spent time in summer school and tending to a family illness during that time.
Along with the aforementioned Taurasi, Brid, and Griner, Maya Moore and Tina Charles managed to start every game during the 2014 World Championship, while Fowles, Catchings, and Delle Donne were each unavailable due to various injuries.
