Olympic Update: Beach Volleyball Matchups
This looks like it will be a loaded field, according to the brackets announced last Saturday, July 9.
44 of the 48 pool participants are already set. The other two matchups were decided on Sunday at the FIVB Continental Cup Finals in Russia.
Here are the top six seeds in each pool according to the FIVB:
Pool A – Alison/Bruno Schmidt, Brazil; Adrian Carambula/Alex Ranghieri, Italy; Clemens Doppler/Alexander Horst, Austria; a team that qualified on Sunday (Canada or Venezuela).
Pool B – Brouwer/Meeuwsen, Netherlands; Piotr Kantor/Bartosz Losiak, Poland; Markus Bockermann/Lars Fluggen, Germany; a team that qualified on Sunday (Belgium or Russia).
Pool C – Phil Dalhausser/Lucena, USA; Daniele Lupo/Paolo Nicolai, Italy; Lombardo Ontiveros/Juan Virgen, Mexico; Choaib Belhaj/Mohamed Naceur, Tunisia.

Once the pool matches take place, the winners and runners-up of each pool will progress automatically to the knock-out stage. Similar to the final three rounds of the NCAA Tournament each December for the ladies and in the spring for the men, the two best third-placed teams will also advance. The last two places forming the round of 16 will be decided by matches between the other third-placed teams.
All matches to take place on picturesque Copacabana Beach between August 6 to 20.
