Concert Review: Rita Lee Really Did Get Her Groove On

Rita Lee Jones was born on December 31, 1947 in Sao Paolo.  Not to be confused with the former Playboy Playmate of the same name who was Miss November 1977, Lee was part of the band Os Muntantes between the years 1968 and 1972.  While there, the group produced seven albums.

Two marriages and the equivalent of a house arrest in 1976 while pregnant, Rita has had quite a career.  She would later join the group Tutti Frutti between 1974 and 1978 before embarking on a solo career starting in 1970 and continuing until 2012.

This concert DVD was the last one she did in 2009 in front of an intimate audience.  Channeling her inner Pat Benatar, she strutted the stage similar to how Stevie Nicks did in the early 1980’s and what Susanna Hoffs from The Bangles would do later in the decade, albeit in her own unique way.

All 18 songs were beautifully done.  Even her English version of “Baby” on Track 9 was cool to see.  There is also a making of section and some behind-the-scenes bloopers as well.

Overall, this is a nice DVD and is a great way to spend an afternoon.
